Honouring Those Who Served
The British Columbia Law Enforcement Memorial exists to honour the police and peace officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of British Columbia and its communities. More than a monument, it is a place of remembrance where families, colleagues, and citizens gather to recognize lives dedicated to protecting others.
Each year, on the last Sunday of September the Memorial serves as the focal point for the Annual British Columbia Law Enforcement Memorial Service, ensuring the courage and sacrifice of fallen officers are remembered with dignity and respect.
Our History
The British Columbia Law Enforcement Memorial traces its origins to Canada’s first national police memorial service, established in 1978 following the tragic death of Ottawa Police Constable David C. Kirkwood. Inspired by the national movement to honour officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, British Columbia established its own provincial memorial.
In 2004, “The Bastion” was unveiled on the grounds of the British Columbia Legislature in Victoria as a permanent tribute to fallen law enforcement officers across the province. Today, it remains the home of the annual Memorial Service and a lasting symbol of remembrance.
